Mohsen Renani: I began writing the book “The Political Economy of Iran’s Nuclear Dispute” in secret exactly 11 years ago (Tir 1384/July 2005) and completed it in mid-1386 (2007). I edited it again in the summer of 1387 (2008), and finally, on 13 Mehr 1387 (October 4, 2008), I reproduced five copies and sent them to five senior officials of the country. I presented the Leader’s copy to Mr. Nategh Nouri (through the follow-up of Dr. Hassan Sobhani, our meeting took place at the Leader’s Inspection Office, and I spent nearly an hour explaining the book’s message). To be certain, I also sent a copy via Dr. Seyed Mohammad Reza Beheshti to the Leader. Dr. Beheshti later said that he personally met with the Leader and presented the book, and very briefly explained the book’s main theory to him, and summarily said that the Leader did not agree with the theory put forward in this book.

I delivered Mr. Ahmadinejad’s copy to Dr. Farhad Rahbar, and he said he had a meeting with the president the next day and would present it in person. Dr. Beheshti also undertook the delivery of the copies to Messrs. Rafsanjani, Shahroudi, and Dr. Larijani. To date, I have not seen any reaction from any of the aforementioned officials, not even an acknowledgment of receipt.

Finally, in Ordibehesht 1392 (April/May 2013), with the breeze of the election atmosphere blowing, I found the courage and published a portion of the book as “Volume One” (with a phosphorescent green cover, 263 pages = about one-third of the original book) in cyberspace, which was widely welcomed. Then, in Ordibehesht 1394 (April/May 2015), I offered the complete version (661 pages with a maroon red cover) for sale through the “Official Renani Website,” and today, on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr (1437 AH), I am making the complete version of this book available to enthusiasts and researchers free of charge.

Very briefly, ten years ago, these ten central claims were made in this book:

1- Iran’s entry into the field of clandestine nuclear enrichment was likely an American design (through the secret sale of contaminated nuclear blueprints and equipment to Iran via Abdul Qadeer Khan, the Pakistani nuclear scientist, who later turned out to be a CIA spy).

2- The West is trying to prolong Iran’s nuclear dispute so that in subsequent regional developments, especially in managing global oil markets, it can, to some extent, manage those areas by turning the wick of this dispute up or down.

3- The main effort of the West, especially America, is to free itself from addiction to and dependence on Persian Gulf oil by the year 2020.

4- Ultimately, the West is trying to move at high speed towards replacing oil with new and clean fuels by the end of the 2020s in order to halt the process of global warming.

5- The best way for the West to both free itself from addiction to the oil of the unstable Middle East region and to replace fossil fuels with clean fuels is a long-term increase in the price of oil. With oil becoming expensive, the growth of oil demand slows and even stops, and investment in clean fuels also becomes economical.

6- The price of oil will remain around $100 and above for seven to ten years and will then decrease to below $50.

7- If Obama becomes president of the United States, the danger of war will be lifted from Iran, but Obama will deal with Iran much more decisively and calculatedly than George Bush. He will bring heavy pressures on Iran through political means and will ultimately bring Iran to a point of checkmate and forced compromise.

8- Now that Obama has announced he is ready to talk with Iran, it is better for Iran to respond positively to this stance of Obama and even begin negotiations with Obama before the US presidential election (2008).

9- The economic damages of the nuclear dispute for Iran are so great in the long term that even if negotiating with America is not in the system’s interest, it is better for Iran to unilaterally and voluntarily halt all its sensitive nuclear activities for several years with an official, open, and publicized announcement, and by creating the possibility of global monitoring, eliminate global suspicion regarding the issue of Iran’s nuclear activities.

10- The Middle East will soon enter the phase of the “Farewell War.” The decline in oil revenues, the spread of poverty and class divisions, coupled with the intervention of great powers in the Middle East, will soon plunge it into a series of protracted wars that I have termed the “Farewell War.” In fact, it is in the interest of Western civilization for the cultural and economic hub of the Islamic world (the Middle East) to become a “scorched earth.”

And now, the decade-long story of “Renani and the Nuclear Dispute” ends at this point. This was one of my intellectual projects in the field of Iran’s political economy. And once again, many tasks lie ahead, left undone. Where are you, children? I am longing to talk with the children of my country.
