Introducing Ettela'at-e Hekmat va Ma'refat Monthly, No. 144: A Dossier on Islamic Mysticism

The dossier in this issue of the journal consists of eight articles, and other pieces have also been published in the Literature and Art, Thought and Opinion, Books, and Reports sections.

Seyyed Masoud Razavi writes in part of the editor's note for issue no. 144: "The diversity, branches, and subdivisions of Sufism and mysticism are such that even if we were to compile a list of the figures, sheikhs, and great masters of Sufism, or the sects, schools, and orders, or the subjects, terminology, and issues, or the places, instruments, and tools, or the books, writings, and treatises related to it, each would become a detailed book, and it is not the work of one or two individuals; over a suitable and lengthy period, with exploration and patience, researchers and masters must delve, write, and learn so that they may pass beyond outward appearances and reach the inner jewels, and, far from ambiguities, the foundations of Sufism may be expounded and the truths clarified for those interested. This dossier, without claiming a comprehensive understanding or the discovery, invention, and expression of a different theory, seeks to rethink and describe Islamic Sufism and mysticism from various perspectives. The ancient view, the definition of distinguishing features and privileges, research into issues and subjects, the analysis and explanation of concepts and schools, historical examination, as well as the aesthetic and literary perspective and manifestation...; these have been the aims of this dossier and collection."

The first article of this issue's dossier is a conversation with William Chittick on "Islamic Traditions and Mysticism," which Marzieh Soleimani has translated into Persian.

The second piece in this collection is also a conversation, with Carl Ernst, translated by Marzieh Soleimani, titled "The Secret of the Red Rose."

The third article is titled "The Rishis of Kashmir, Messengers of Peace and Friendship" and was written by Saeed Karimi.

The fourth piece is an article by Seyyed Masoud Razavi titled "The Mujtahid of Khorasan and the Sufis of the Saracheh," which the author penned in light of the strong emphasis of Professor Dr. Mohammad Reza Shafiei Kadkani on the importance of the poetry and spiritual disposition of Mirza Habib Khorasani.

The fifth article in this dossier is titled "Sa'di and Mysticism" and is an introduction to a comprehensive treatise on Sa'di's mysticism authored by Hamid Yazdanparast, a researcher of Iranian literature and culture.

"The Neoplatonic Roots of Islamic Mysticism," by Kumuran Godelek and translated by Mohammad Reza Moradi Tadi, constitutes the sixth piece in this collection.

The seventh article, namely "The Process of the Ideological and Technological Transformation of Sufism in the Contemporary Era," is by Carl Ernst, translated by Zahra Towfighi and Elham Rastad.

As for the eighth and final article of this dossier, it is titled "Beauty from the Perspective of Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi and Fakhruddin Iraqi," written by Sirus Ali Zargar and translated into Persian by Alireza Rezayat.

In the Literature and Art section, we review three articles, which are: "The World of Poetry and the Universe of Images," a conversation between Manouchehr Dinparast and Khatereh Sheibani; "Value in Art" by Gordon Graham, translated by Enshallah Rahmati; and finally, "The Revival of Classical Aesthetics" by Władysław Tatarkiewicz, translated by Seyyed Javad Fenderski.

The Thought and Opinion section of this issue contains two articles: "The Treatise of Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami al-Naysaburi in Condemnation of the Science of Kalam," by Mohammad Suri; and "The Doctrinal Philosophy of Mazdak: The Search for Justice in the Ancient World," by Abolghasem Akhte.

The final two sections of this monthly are the Books and Reports sections, with the titles "The Tension of Culture in the History of Afghanistan" by Seyyed Masoud Razavi; and a book review and introduction, and a conversation between Monireh Panjtani and Hossein Sheikh Rezaei...

The one hundred and forty-fourth issue of Ettela'at-e Hekmat va Ma'refat monthly, dated Farvardin 1397 (March/April 2018), with the title "Islamic Mysticism," under the editorship and directorship of Enshallah Rahmati, was made available to enthusiasts at a price of 5,000 Tomans.
