Lecture by Dr. Rasoul Roknizadeh: “Wisdom and Mathematics”
A 'wisdom-oriented' approach to mathematics, as opposed to a 'knowledge-oriented' one, seeks to answer questions about the nature of mathematical reality and the criteria for its significance. A sapiential understanding of mathematics inspires a passion for learning in students; a lecture by Dr. Rasoul Roknizadeh.
In recent years, some thinkers have proposed the subject of "wisdom studies" as opposed to "knowledge studies." We will analyze this approach in relation to one of humanity's most sublime achievements, namely mathematics. This lecture addresses the following questions:
- Is mathematics of the same nature as other human knowledge, such as the natural sciences? - If so, what kind of reality is mathematical knowledge about? - What is the criterion for distinguishing important mathematics from unimportant mathematics?
A philosophical view of mathematics can answer such questions. A philosophical understanding of mathematics leads to the stimulation of a passion for learning in students of mathematics.
