A lecture series on Hegel’s Philosophy of Right, taught by Mostafa Zali, examines the realization of freedom and the role of institutions through a dialectical approach, covering the three stages of abstract right, morality, and ethical life, along with a critique of contract.
The aim of the lectures on Hegel's Elements of the Philosophy of Right is to become acquainted with the principal elements of political philosophy in the German idealism tradition through a direct encounter with one of the central texts of this tradition, namely Hegel's Elements of the Philosophy of Right.
Hegel himself describes the philosophy of right as the philosophy of freedom; thus, in this work we encounter Hegel's conception of the most important concept of modern political thought—freedom—and its relation to the life of social community, specifically civil society and the state. Hegel introduces right as the existence of the free will in the world. Therefore, for him, the philosophy of right is precisely the philosophy of freedom, and in this work he seeks the actualization of freedom in social life, specifically the manner of its realization in the human social world and the role of institutions in realizing this freedom. This book, through a dialectical approach, expresses the development of the conception of right in three stages: abstract right, morality, and ethical life. Ethical life, as the final step of the dialectical triad of the science of right, which also constitutes the most detailed part of the book, is devoted to Hegel's account of the fundamental institutions of modern society, namely civil society and the state. The critique of the social contract, the value of the free market in realizing human freedom, Hegel's conception of the capitalist economic system, and the role of the state in realizing human freedom are among the key and also controversial topics of this work, around which numerous interpretive disputes have formed, and some of these will be touched upon in this course.
