In Rumi's thought, love can both cure selfishness and cultivate morality, while in the divine realm it can become destructive and consume all ethics. An examination of the stories in the Masnavi shows that only pure, disinterested love brings virtue, and not every love is desirable; love tainted by self-interest is disgraceful.
