Sedanet's Conversation with Arash Naraghi: Critical Traditionalism in Religion
In his model of 'critical traditionalism,' Arash Naraghi seeks to preserve both the authenticity of religious tradition and critical rationality—a model that, in contrast to the views of Shabestari and Soroush, was examined following Malekian's critique in a Sedanet conversation.
Arash Naraghi, in his article “Critical Traditionalism in the Realm of Religion,” seeks to propose and defend his suggested model within the current of religious reformism. His model is called “critical traditionalism” because, in his view, both religious tradition and critical rationality hold authenticity. He considers his chosen model to be at odds with the models of Shabestari, Soroush, and certain other religious intellectuals. This article consists of two main, general parts, the first of which includes Naraghi’s positions and theoretical foundations in theology and in defense of the rationality of religious beliefs, and the second of which outlines the religious legal system in relation to ethics.
The first part of the article provoked a critical reaction from Mostafa Malekian (Part One-Part Two), which led to Naraghi’s response to his criticisms. Subsequently, Sedanet, in a conversation with Arash Naraghi—hosted by Omid Keshmiri—discussed the aspects and assumptions of this article.
