Lynn White Jr. was an American historian specializing in medieval history and the history of technology, who gained worldwide recognition for his influential 1967 essay "The Historical Roots of Our Ecologic Crisis." In this essay, he examined the role of certain Western religious and cultural traditions in shaping anthropocentric attitudes toward nature and became one of the influential figures in historical and philosophical critiques of environmental thought.
