Life and Thought
Siavash Shahshahani, born in 1942 in Tehran, is an Iranian mathematician and professor emeritus at Sharif University of Technology. He received his PhD in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley, and has worked in fields such as geometry, topology, dynamical systems, and mathematics education. Shahshahani has also been an influential figure in the development of the internet in Iran and the management of the .ir national domain.
Siavash Mirshams Shahshahani was born in 1942 in Tehran. He went to the United States to study mathematics, and after completing his university studies, received his PhD in mathematics in 1969 from the University of California, Berkeley, under the supervision of Stephen Smale.
After periods of teaching and research at American universities, Shahshahani returned to Iran and joined the faculty of Sharif University of Technology in the 1970s. He taught and conducted research in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Sharif, playing a role in training numerous generations of mathematics students in Iran.
His main areas of research and teaching have been geometry, topology, dynamical systems, differentiable manifolds, and the philosophy of mathematics. His works include the book "An Introductory Course on Differentiable Manifolds" and textbooks on differential and integral calculus.
In addition to his academic activities, Shahshahani holds an important place in the history of technology in Iran. In the early years of the internet's arrival in Iran, he played a role in the management and organization of the .ir national domain and is considered one of the well-known figures in the development of the country's early internet infrastructure.
