Emad Afroogh's Lecture: 'Research and the Humanities'

Dr. Emad Afroogh, professor of sociology at Tarbiat Modares University and former representative of the people of Tehran, spoke on the first day of the Research Week commemoration ceremony at the Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies about the well-known dualisms in the humanities and analyzed the obstacles to the growth and development of the humanities in Iran. Dr. Afroogh considered one of the pervasive deviations of the humanities to stem from the mind-body dualism originating with Descartes, and identified other dualisms such as reason and love as further deviations. He stated that a dialectical relationship can be discovered between these dualisms and unity within plurality can be achieved. Dr. Afroogh also addressed the quantification and the dominance of numbers and figures in the humanities in Iran, and considered the excessive focus on points and writing ISI articles to be among the obstacles to the growth of the humanities. Dr. Afroogh cited attention to the philosophy of Mulla Sadra for discovering unity among dualisms and moving away from quantitative competition as a solution to this predicament.
