Issue 149 of Ettela'at-e Hekmat va Ma'refat: 'The Poetry and Thought of Hafez'

Issue 149 of the journal Ettela'at-e Hekmat va Ma'refat has been published under the title "The Poetry and Thought of Hafez." This journal, which was published monthly until August 2018, is now being published quarterly with slight structural changes after a short hiatus of a few months.

In addition to the editorial titled "The Circle of Interpretation" by the editor-in-chief, Enshallah Rahmati, the journal consists of three sections: Special Issue, Thought and Opinion, and Books. The special issue section comprises ten articles. Masoud Faryamanesh served as the editor for this issue of the quarterly.

The first piece, titled "Hafez and the Grace of His Speech," is a conversation conducted by Maryam Hosseini with Fathollah Mojtabaei. "In this conversation, Professor Dr. Fathollah Mojtabaei has elaborated on topics such as the reasons for the unparalleled prevalence of Hafez's poetry among Persian speakers, Hafez's status and the characteristics of his poetry, the history of bestowing the title 'Lesan al-Ghayb' (Tongue of the Unseen) upon Khajeh of Shiraz, the reasons for consulting his Divan for divination among Persian speakers, and similar subjects.

The second piece is an article titled "Hafez and the Rogue" by Leonard Lewisohn, translated by Akram Hadian Najafabadi, which includes a discussion on the spirituality inherent in Hafez's metaphorical love.

The third article, titled "Magic and Its Semiotic Horizons in Hafez's Poetry," was written by Franklin Lewis and translated into Persian by Mohammad Reza Adli. "Franklin Lewis's article also contains useful points about magic and its semiotic horizons in Hafez's poetry.

The fourth article, titled "The Greek Goat and the Shirazi Sheep," was written by Johann Christoph Bürgel and translated into Persian by Maryam Rezaei, and "is dedicated to Iqbal Lahori's encounter with Hafez's poetry.

The fifth article, titled "Hafez and the Sufi," is by Charles-Henri de Fouchécour, translated by Mohammad Ehsan Mosahafi. In this article, Fouchécour has attempted to clarify Hafez's dual approach towards the character of the Sufi.

The sixth article, titled "The Allegory of Wine-Drinking and the Manifestation of the Beloved in 9th/16th Century Illustrations of Hafez's Poems," by Michael Barry and translated by Valiollah Kavousi, "is dedicated to a meticulous re-reading of Hafez's poetry from the perspective of painters at the end of the Timurid era and the beginning of the Safavid era.

The seventh and eighth articles, in a way, contain a brief mention of Hafez's influence beyond Iran's borders; the seventh article is titled "Hafez and Music," by Franklin Lewis, translated by Mitra Sarhadi.

The eighth article is titled "The Heart and the Mirror: Translation and Semantic and Lexical Influence," written by Najmeh Shobeiri. This article "addresses the process of translating Hafez's poetry and its influence on Spanish literature, particularly in the poems of Lorca."

The ninth article, titled "Hafez of Shiraz in the Works of Nikolai Gumilyov," was written by Elaheh Karimi Riabi

and deals with the influence of Khajeh's poetry on Russian literature, especially the poems of Nikolai Gumilyov.

The final article of the special issue, titled "Seeking the Garden of Paradise," by Masoud Faryamanesh, is dedicated to discussing the external/outer goal of life in Hafez's poems. "According to this research, two important goals can generally be identified as the external/outer goals of life in Hafez's Divan.

The second section of the journal is "Thought and Opinion" and consists of one article titled "The Meaning and Value of Life" by Paul Edwards, translated by Hedayat Alavitabar.

The final section of the journal, titled "Books," comprises three pieces. The first article, titled "Theatre of Ideas: In Praise of the Kinship of Philosophy and Theatre," is by Monireh Panjtani, the editor of the books section; the second piece, titled "Dramatic Philosophy/Philosophical Drama," is a conversation with Morteza Nouri, the translator of the book; and the last piece is an introduction to the book "The Poetics of the Stage."

The quarterly Ettela'at-e Hekmat va Ma'refat, on the theme of "The Poetry and Thought of Hafez," serial number 149, special issue for Autumn 2018, was published under the managing directorship and editorship of Enshallah Rahmati, priced at 15,000 Tomans.
