Max Horkheimer was a German philosopher and sociologist and one of the founding figures of the Frankfurt School. As director of the Institute for Social Research, he developed critical theory and examined instrumental reason, capitalism, and cultural domination in works such as Eclipse of Reason and Dialectic of Enlightenment.
