John Rogers Searle was an American philosopher and a major figure in analytic philosophy, particularly in the philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, and social ontology. He was known for his theory of speech acts, his analysis of intentionality, and especially the “Chinese room” argument, through which he challenged the view that the mind can be explained simply in terms of the execution of a computer program.
