Life and Thought
Mohammad-Reza Shafiei Kadkani (pen name M. Sereshk) is a poet, literary scholar, and distinguished professor at the University of Tehran. Born in 1939 in Kadkan, he works in the fields of contemporary poetry, literary criticism, and the critical edition of mystical texts.
Mohammad-Reza Shafiei Kadkani, pen name "M. Sereshk," is a poet, literary scholar, editor of classical texts, literary theorist, and distinguished professor at the University of Tehran. He was born in 1939 in Kadkan, near Torbat-e Heydarieh, and from childhood was nurtured through traditional education in religious sciences, Arabic, and Persian literature. He then studied Persian literature at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad and the University of Tehran, and began teaching at the University of Tehran in the late 1960s.
Shafiei Kadkani holds a prominent position in two areas: first, in contemporary Persian poetry, especially with collections such as In the Alley-Gardens of Nishapur; and second, in literary scholarship, poetry criticism, the critical edition of mystical texts, and the study of Iran's poetic and Sufi traditions. His works typically bridge classical learning, a historical perspective, and attention to modern literary theories.
