Life and Thought
Iraj Shahbazi, born in 1972 in Nahavand, is a researcher of Persian literature and a Rumi scholar. He has been an assistant professor at the University of Tehran’s Dehkhoda Lexicon Institute, and his main fields of activity are mystical literature and the teaching of Persian language.
Iraj Shahbazi, born in 1972 in Nahavand, is a researcher of Persian literature, a Rumi scholar, a writer and an assistant professor at the University of Tehran’s Dehkhoda Lexicon Institute. His main areas of work are mystical literature, Rumi studies, the teaching of Persian language and the analysis of classical Persian texts.
Shahbazi has followed a varied academic path. He first studied the foundations of Islamic jurisprudence and law at the University of Tehran and obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1995. He then received a master’s degree in teaching Persian to non-Persian speakers from Shiraz University in 1999. Afterwards he earned another master’s degree in Persian language and literature from Imam Khomeini International University in Qazvin and completed his PhD in Persian language and literature at the University of Tehran in 2007.
The combination of his studies in jurisprudence, Persian language teaching and classical literature has enabled him in his research to attend both to the linguistic and pedagogical aspects of texts and to their intellectual, mystical and semantic layers. A significant part of his scholarly activity is devoted to Rumi, the Masnavi, mystical literature and the commentary and analysis of Persian texts.
